Heritage and Modernism

Finistère is a marine orientated region par excellence. Long term commercial sector, naval base, inland and deep sea fishing industry, marine distribution and navigation have all shaped the minds of this region for centuries.

The main department of France for watersports, the inventor of the ‘Classes de mer’ (sailing school) and nursery ground for champions, Finistère is very well equipped. Its assets include 120 watersport centres, 15 Leisure Ports, thousands of moorings distributed along its coastline, sheltered in the creaks of many bays and natural harbours, on the canals at Brest and Nantes and on many inland stretches of water.

The Marine Sector : « Knowledge and Innovation »

Shipyard workers (fishing and leisure), sail makers, riggers, architects, designers, marine cooperatives, equipment suppliers, clothing, ... the dynamism and the creativity of these contractors testify to the diversity of this sector in Finistère.

Quote

Jean Le Cam – Skipper – Single Hull 60ft « I met some people who were as passionate as I was and I straight away understood in what was residing the richness and the strength of this department, that which is summed up in one word – Culture. That which seems to be so inbuilt that its sticks to your skin. Culture of the sea, culture of a region of travellers, fishermen, culture at the root of Europe. I have always said to myself that Finistere was saying hello to America, to Ireland, to England and to Spain. All one needs to do is to take a map and draw lines out from Finistère spaced at 5 degrees, even though it looks like they go nowhere, each line always leads you to land. This is equally true coming from the other direction… and so I say ‘Welcome !’”
