To watch the movement of the traditional barges which convey tons of freight from Porto right up to the Atlantic coast and to be reminded of the expertise needed to navigate under sail on a river that can be unpredictable, is a daily spectacle on the River Douro. On certain days, local events and regatta offer a view on all the skills of these boatmen who even though they sail on fresh water, do not have any less of a maritime heritage in their blood.
