Project key elements

The project ‘development of the water sports sector’ aims to be innovative in the way it answers the tourism needs of the Atlantic Area

  • The project will take into account the growing demand of the European population for leisure activities, particularly water sports.
  • It aims to favour the development of an economic sector based on an interactive dynamic relationship between the regional networks and the interregional network, all of which will be mobilised for the Interreg project.
  • By means of its economic, social, educational, tourism, sporting, entertainment and cultural dimensions, the water sports project can fully integrate regional development projects and help contribute to their successful achievement.
  • It is an original project which aims to develop nautical tourism based on the rapid development of the local population’s practical experience and skill in water sports activities.
  • The project promotes different branches of the water sports sector through the objectives of sustainable development. One of the objectives is to encourage these sectors to work as part of a network in order to favour their complementarities, their strengths, the coordination of their activities,… while at the same time conducting a regional development programme which takes into account quality of life, and which integrates economic, environmental, social and educational aspects…
  • It aims to create a united front based on common products but also focusing on the specific characteristics of each region.
  • It aims to create a regional network in each area.
  • The networks will create a brand “Nautisme en Espace Atlantique” (Water sports in the Atlantic Area) which will be associated with a common seal of approval.
  • The project contributes to the cohesion of the Atlantic Area by favouring closer relationships between the regions through water sports.

An interregional coordination structure relying on regional partners

A Steering Committee will gather the project partners together once a year. Responsible for the general project objectives, they will examine and adopt the reports of project activities. A Coordinating Committee will be the technical element of the interregional project coordination and management. Technicians in charge of the implementation of the project in each region will meet quarterly.
The Project Leader will employ an interregional coordinator who will be in charge of the animation and management, the coordination of the actions and actors, evaluation, follow up and control of the project.

Expected results contributing to the development of the regions of the Atlantic Area

  • The development of the sector through the increase in the number of water sports buildings and infrastructure, the development of services, trade and industry and the extension of the operating season.
  • Development of the number of visitors and the number of clients for services, trade and industry during the tourism season and outside the tourism season.
  • Development of employment opportunities
  • Increase in the overall turnover of the sector.
